about pipas labs

Pipas Labs is a non-profit organization that develops and distributes creative technology education kits for marginalized urban communities, creating pathways to greater economic inclusion and social equality.

Kits

Our creative technology kits are a class-in-a-box, delivered to those in Brazil's urban periphery who lack access to both the materials and education to participate in the 21st century economy and make their voices heard.

Program

Pipas delivers its kits as part of educational programs in schools and social organizations. We offer teacher training and customized courses. Individual kits are also available and provide everything needed to participants to complete the activity at home.

change through play

Pipas Labs began in 2015 with one question: how might we merge Brazilian kite-fighting culture with technology to combat inequality and injustice? We began with a smart toy concept and an education program in the urban periphery of Rio de Janeiro, with a more equitable and just world as our dream.

including the whole world

We seek to use technology to combat divisions and inequality, not augment them. We imagined a smart toy that invites the world the play together, that would support an education program that equips urban peripheries with the skills to participate in the new economy and diversify the world of technology.

creative tech in a box

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Pipas Labs transformed its educational program from one that was classroom-based to one that delivers its content and programming in the form of a kit reaching those those with least access with more facility. Our smart-toy concept and workshops served as inspiration and foundation.

Experiments

Our smart toy concept sought to transform traditional forms of play into modern games to play together.

kites inspire us

Kite fighting culture in Brazil, a national pastime, combines powerful cultural elements that we believe make the world a better place - beauty, movement, play and healthy competition.
